Evelyn Wheat, born September 14, 1911, entered the next part of eternal life on August 18, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, George H. Wheat, who passed in 1996. Survivors include her son Charles Thomas (Tom) Wheat, brother Walter C. (Bud) Swanson and his wife Helen, brother-in-law Thomas Edwin Wheat and his wife Amy, and numerous nieces and nephews, including several of a second and third generation.
Born in Chicago, IL, she spent much of her early life in Austin, TX, where she graduated from nursing school in the 1930ís. She moved to Baytown in the 1940ís to take a nursing job at Baytown Hospital. Married to George (Buck) Wheat in 1945, she lived in Baytown until 1997, when she moved to Houston to be near her son. For the last nine years she lived at Heartland Healthcare Center. The family wishes to thank the staff of Heartland and especially the private caregivers, led by Barbara Hearne, who devoted so much time and love to her care.
Most of her life was dedicated to taking care of others, her patients during her nursing career, her family, and her various cats and one dog that were also part of the family. Those who knew and loved her always admired her determination not only to live, but to thrive. In 2005, at the age of 94, she survived a series of strokes and seizures that left her wheelchair bound, and she recovered enough to enjoy going out to lunch with the Heartland group and two more of her birthday celebrations. Her spunk and spirit were apparent right up to her final illness.
A Memorial Celebration of her life will be held at 11 am Friday, August 29 at Mission Bend United Methodist Church, 3710 Highway 6, South. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be sent to Mission Bend UMC at the address above. A private service of interment will be held at the mausoleum of Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown on Thursday, August 28.
